The Future [of Coaching] Isn't What You Think

Navigating humanity's next evolution through the lens of conscious coaching - By Alex King-Harris

Remember when you first learned to ride a bike? That wobbly moment when your parent let go and suddenly – terrifyingly – you were on your own? That's where we are with AI. Except the training wheels aren't just coming off our jobs – they're coming off our entire understanding of what it means to be human.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Not just as a coach, but as a human watching other humans grapple with the rising tide of artificial intelligence. We're all feeling it, aren't we? That subtle undercurrent of "what happens when the machines can do it better?"

But here's the thing about machines doing it better: they're missing the point entirely.

Because what happens after the machines take our jobs isn't actually about the jobs at all. It's about the void. The questioning. The late-night existential wonderings that keep us staring at our ceilings, asking: "If I'm not what I do... then what am I?"

Our ancestors never had this problem. They were too busy trying not to get eaten by bears.

No, really – think about it. Every action they took was directly connected to survival. Hunt, gather, build, protect. The meaning was built in. But us? We've created a world so complex, so abstracted from basic survival, that we've lost touch with what makes us fundamentally human.

And now AI is about to make that abstraction even more... abstract.

But wait. This isn't actually a doom-and-gloom story. (Plot twist!)

Because here's what nobody's talking about: As AI strips away the artificial structures we've built around purpose and meaning, we have an unprecedented opportunity to rediscover what it means to be truly, messily, gloriously human.

This is where coaching gets interesting.

Not the old kind of coaching – the "let's set goals and make action plans" kind. I mean the kind of coaching that helps people navigate the void between who they thought they were and who they might become. The kind that helps them untangle from the addictive loops of technology that promise comfort but deliver emptiness.

Speaking of those loops... have you noticed how much of our technology is designed to hack our survival instincts? We're not just fighting distraction – we're up against sophisticated systems designed to hijack the very mechanisms that kept our ancestors alive. The dopamine hits, the social validation, the fear of missing out – it's all weaponized against our attention, our energy, our humanity.

Ready for the real revolution?

As AI becomes more powerful, it's not just changing what we do – it's changing how we relate to doing itself. And that's the real battleground. Not whether AI can do our jobs better, but whether we can maintain our connection to life-affirming actions in a world designed to keep us comfortably numb.

This is coaching's moment.

Not because coaches have all the answers (we don't), but because we know how to hold space for the questions. We know how to help people reconnect with their humanity when everything around them feels increasingly artificial.

I'll let you in on a secret:

The future of coaching isn't about choosing between human wisdom and artificial intelligence. It's about something far more interesting – it's about using both to help people navigate what might be the biggest transformation in human history.

Imagine coaching that combines deep human wisdom with insights we've never had access to before. Imagine support that extends beyond sessions, accountability that feels like partnership rather than surveillance, growth that feels organic rather than forced.

But here's the real kicker – the thing that keeps me up at night (in a good way):

What if this AI revolution isn't actually about AI at all? What if it's about humans finally figuring out what makes us human in the first place?

That's the conversation I want to have. That's the future of coaching I'm excited about. Not because it's easy or comfortable, but because it's real. Because it matters. Because in a world of increasing artificial intelligence, real human connection and growth become not just important, but essential.

More to come on this. Much more. But for now, I'd love to hear your thoughts: What does being human mean to you in an AI world?
